How to Avoid Holiday Overindulgence: Wisdom from Proverbs on Gluttony and Self-Control

Proverbs 23:19–21, 2
“Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path. Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.”
“…put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony.”

TL;DR:
Holidays invite indulgence, but Proverbs warns you to choose wisdom, moderation, and gratitude instead of excess.

Proverbs offers blunt truth:
Overindulgence—whether in food or alcohol—leads to regret, dullness, and lack of self-control. God isn’t trying to ruin your fun; He’s protecting your health, your clarity, and your relationships.

The holidays are full of delicious meals and celebratory moments. Fellowship around food is a blessing. But gluttony and drunkenness can quickly steal that blessing, turning joy into chaos, shame, or conflict.

You can enjoy the celebration without letting the celebration control you.

Instead of eating every bite, savor each bite.
Instead of “just one more drink,” consider choosing none at all.
Instead of excess, practice gratitude.

A thankful heart makes simple things feel abundant.
Less truly becomes more.

Choose the right path—one filled with wisdom, peace, and self-control.
