Proverbs 12:1
“Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid.”Proverbs 19:3
“A man’s own folly ruins his life, yet his heart rages against the Lord.”Romans 6:12
“Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.”Romans 6:16
“Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?”
tl;dr
Breaking free from destructive patterns is not just about stopping harmful behaviors—it is about actively pursuing what is life-giving through God.
When I quit drinking, I had to choose to STOP turning to alcohol and START turning to God.
That shift was everything.
I could not focus only on what I was trying to quit. If all I thought about was what I was giving up, I would have stayed trapped in the battle. Instead, I had to focus on what I wanted to pursue. I had to leave my sin in the past and intentionally move toward a sober, fulfilling, Christ-centered life.
In AA we say, “Don’t drink, go to meetings.”
Stop and Go.
The “go” is what helped me stay clean. Pursuing healthy living, godly relationships, truth, accountability, and purpose created something new in the space where addiction once lived.
When a destructive behavior stops, it leaves a vacuum. If that empty space is not filled with something life-giving, old habits will try to reclaim it.
That is true far beyond alcohol.
When I pursue what is right, the wrong begins to lose its grip. When I seek God first, sinful desires become quieter. Obedience grows stronger through practice.
Correction is not punishment. Discipline is not rejection. Both are gifts that help redirect life toward health, freedom, and righteousness.
What is being pursued today?
What is filling the empty spaces?
Pursue what helps, not what harms.
Leave the old ways behind and cling to the new.
