Can You Overlook an Insult?

Proverbs 12:16
“A fool shows his annoyance at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult.”

Proverbs 19:11
“A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.”

tl;dr
Overlooking offenses requires wisdom and patience. Choosing grace over irritation brings peace to both relationships and the heart.

Can we overlook offenses and insults?

According to Proverbs, not only can we, but there is wisdom and glory in doing so.

That can be easier said than done.

When someone hurts feelings, speaks harshly, or treats us unfairly, the natural response is often to react immediately. We want to defend ourselves, prove our point, or return the offense. Yet Scripture points to a better way.

“A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.”

What a beautiful truth.

When I am able to overlook an insult, my life is better. I have more peace. I waste less energy replaying conversations and carrying resentment. Instead of being consumed by what someone else said or did, I am free to move forward.

We are all going through something all the time. Everyone is carrying burdens that may not be visible. Pain, fear, grief, disappointment, stress, and uncertainty often affect how people treat one another.

My great-grandmother used to say, “Pray for patience, kindness, and understanding.”

What wonderful advice.

Most people are doing the best they can with what they have. That does not excuse hurtful behavior, but it can help create compassion where judgment might otherwise grow.

Today, let’s do our best to give each other patience, kindness, and understanding.

A little grace goes a long way.
